Technological advancements have made it possible to digitise sound. It is now possible and practical to digitise speech and transmit it over the Internet with sufficient speed and quality. Telephone conversations can be conducted using the Internet as the medium instead of the traditional telephone network.
Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), composed of Telephony GateWays, offers the lowest cost per minute of any calling plan. Typically International calls for 70% to 90% less than International rates from traditional carriers.
The GateWays play a very important part in the infrastructure as they are the bridge between the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and the Internet. They also enable callers to place long-distance and international calls over the Internet at reduced cost. The GateWay's main tasks are to compress, digitise and convert the voice call into IP protocol packets that can be transported over the Internet or a Private Data Network (PDN). A GateWay also includes user ID and password verification features.
LamdaTEL, a division of Komo Ventures, has GateWays built on a computer/server platform with the following system components:
interface to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) via E1/T1 connections
Digital Signal Processing (DSP) to support simultaneous calls
software to perform complex tasks such as compression
GateWays connected to the IP network via standard Ethernet interfaces
IP packets sent to a router and then to the network
Our prime objectives are to maximise existing revenue streams while cost-effectively creating new profitable service opportunities. Our experience has centred on:
introduction of VOIP services
GateWay and GateKeeper deployment
establishment of distribution channels
business model development
