The GateWays play a very important part in the infrastructure as they are the bridge between the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and the Internet. The GateWay's main tasks are to compress, digitise and convert the voice call into IP protocol packets that can be transported over the Internet or a Private Data Network (PDN).
