Job Description
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Communications and Public Relations will develop and execute short- and long-term comprehensive marketing communications plans, strategies, messaging, and campaigns. This role will proactively advance the interests of the organization by aligning communications efforts with its strategic goals.
Key Responsibilities:
Media Relations & Public Relations (25%):
Proactively plan and execute a full range of national press/media activities, building and maintaining strong media relationships.
Secure high-level media coverage through news releases, feature stories, interviews, etc.
Manage media outreach and coverage for annual conferences, including TV coverage and national/international media.
Represent the organization at high-level events such as [mention specific examples].
Anticipate and effectively manage crisis communications.
Member Communications (30%):
As Managing Editor, oversee the planning, design, production, and distribution of the organization's newsmagazine.
Serve as Editor of the monthly electronic member newsletter.
Write, edit, and proofread a wide range of high-quality communication materials for members and other audiences.
Develop and oversee the production of various communications materials, including news releases, media kits, speeches, talking points, and presentations.
Strategic Communications & Marketing Campaigns (25%):
Collaborate with leadership to translate the strategic plan into effective communications strategies for diverse audiences.
Provide expert guidance and counsel to leaders on a broad range of communications issues.
Create and implement systems to measure the success of marketing, media relations, and social media campaigns.
Oversee strategic and marketing communications campaigns for the organization's products and services, positioning the organization as a leading authority in medical genetics.
Develop and execute an international Medical Genetics Awareness Week campaign to celebrate the contributions of the medical genetics team.
Provide communications and media relations counsel to the organization's peer-reviewed journal.
Write RFPs and negotiate contracts with vendors as needed for communications projects.
Manage multiple large-scale, complex projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and staying within budget.
Social Media (15%):
Oversee the organization's social media presence, including strategy development and program execution.
Create and uphold social media policies and serve as an internal social media expert.
Stay informed about emerging social media platforms and recommend new programs.
Track and analyze social media effectiveness.
Engage audiences effectively and build a strong online community across platforms like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Instagram.
Brand & Visual Communications (5%):
Guide and enforce consistent branding and messaging across all communication channels.
Oversee the development and implementation of branding strategies and create a style guide.
Provide internal communication expertise and support to other departments.
Hire and direct external vendors (graphic designers, writers, printers, video producers) to produce high-quality materials on time and within budget.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Public Affairs, Marketing, or Journalism required.
Master's Degree strongly preferred.
Minimum of ten (10) years of experience managing communications strategy development in a nonprofit, hospital, or medical society environment.
Background or relevant work experience in the medical, science, or genetics field highly desired.
Strong enthusiasm for the mission of the organization.
Proven track record of successfully developing and executing integrated communications strategies for a nonprofit or medical society.
Experience with developing/executing digital and earned media campaign plans and content marketing plans.
Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
Proven problem-solving and creative thinking abilities.
Strong project management skills, including the ability to organize, prioritize, and handle multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with team members, leadership, members, and stakeholders.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms.

Additional Information:
This role primarily requires sedentary work with occasional domestic travel (up to 10%).
