Job Description

One of our clients is seeking an experienced Database Architect to lead the design and implementation of cloud-native, enterprise-grade database solutions in Microsoft Azure . This position is a key contributor to the Department’s modernization efforts, ensuring transparency, resilience, and audit-ability for public-facing election data systems .

Key Responsibilities

• Architect, implement, and maintain cloud-native database solutions using Azure SQL Database , Azure SQL Managed Instance , and Azure Cosmos DB .
  

• Design and oversee resilient and scalable data platforms in compliance with governance, transparency , and auditing requirements .
  

• Collaborate with engineering, analytics, and data governance teams to align database architecture with organizational goals.
  

• Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools like ARM templates , Bicep , or Terraform for database provisioning and management.
  

• Develop robust disaster recovery , geo-replication , and high availability strategies.
  

• Integrate systems using Azure Data Factory , Azure Synapse , and Azure Monitor for data orchestration and visibility.
  

• Enforce best practices in data classification , encryption , masking , and RBAC within Azure environments.
  

• Support auditable data pipelines and public datasets, including elections-related data and open data portals.
  

• Use T-SQL to automate diagnostics, reporting, and repeatable processes.
  

• Participate in design reviews , security assessments , and data governance audits .
  

• Promote and implement DevSecOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines for database changes.
  

• Create and maintain technical documentation for both internal and public-facing audiences.
  

Requirements

Required Skills and Experience

• Minimum 5 years of experience as a Database Architect or similar role, including:
  

  • At least 2 years focused on cloud-native Azure database services
    

  • Azure SQL Database, Azure Managed Instance, and Cosmos DB
    

  • IaC tools: ARM, Bicep, Terraform
    

  • Azure Data Factory, Synapse, and Azure Monitor
    

  • T-SQL scripting and automation
    

• Deep knowledge of cloud-native architecture patterns : elasticity, statelessness, and self-healing systems.
  

• Experience supporting public-facing , highly scrutinized datasets (e.g., election data).
  

• Strong grasp of security and compliance standards , including data masking, RBAC, encryption, and audit trail best practices.
  

• Proven ability to evaluate performance vs cost in a pay-as-you-go cloud environment .
  

• Familiarity with Agile/Scrum and modern DevOps workflows.
  

• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to document systems for public or legal review.
  

Highly Desired Qualifications

• Microsoft Certifications (any of the following):
  

  • Azure Database Administrator Associate
    

  • Azure Solutions Architect Expert
    

  • DP-203: Azure Data Engineer Associate
    

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science , Information Systems , or a related field.
  

Additional Requirements

• Candidate must reside within the United States throughout the assignment.
  

• This position is not eligible for offshore outsourcing due to security policies.
