Job Description

The PreK Teacher (4-Year-Old Classroom) is responsible for creating and implementing a dynamic and developmentally appropriate curriculum that aligns with the mission, values, and pillars of Charleston Collegiate School. This position requires a nurturing, creative, and organized educator who fosters a love for learning and builds a strong foundation in both academics and social-emotional development. The teacher will establish a supportive, stimulating, and inclusive classroom environment where every child feels valued and encouraged to grow in all areas—socially, emotionally, and academically.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement a curriculum aligned with CCS’s Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach that integrates play, exploration, and hands-on discovery with a strong emphasis on early academics.
  • Scaffold learning experiences to support the developmental and academic needs of 4-year-olds, focusing on early literacy (letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and pre-writing skills), numeracy (counting, patterns, shapes, and basic problem-solving), social-emotional skills, and fine and gross motor development.
  • Incorporate CCS core values of empathy, integrity, community, optimism, and advocacy into daily lessons, routines, and interactions.
  • Establish a safe, welcoming, and well-organized classroom environment that encourages curiosity and fosters a love of learning.
  • Model and promote positive social-emotional skills, such as cooperation, self-regulation, empathy, and problem-solving.
  • Implement clear, consistent routines and expectations to create a secure, structured environment where students feel confident and independent.
  • Partner with families to celebrate each child’s growth and address challenges, maintaining regular, proactive communication about student progress, milestones, and learning goals.
  • Introduce foundational academic skills through engaging, age-appropriate activities, such as reading stories, exploring math manipulatives, conducting simple science experiments, and fostering early writing and creative expression.
  • Collaborate with other teachers and staff to integrate cross-curricular opportunities and align with CCS’s values and goals.
  • Work with the Special Area team (e.g., art, music, movement, language, outdoor education) to enhance and deepen learning experiences.
  • Provide opportunities for outdoor and nature-based learning using CCS’s outdoor campus to encourage exploration and hands-on engagement with the environment.
  • Incorporate connections with the local community to provide meaningful, real-world experiences and broaden students’ understanding of the world around them.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe classroom environment to support a positive learning atmosphere.
  • Participate in school-wide meetings, professional development opportunities, and events to stay informed and aligned with CCS’s educational philosophy.
  • Stay current with best practices in early childhood education and incorporate innovative strategies to support student growth.
