Phlebotomists are expected to instruct patients on specimen collection procedures and perform venipunctures, capillary sticks and Point of Care testing following standard collection methods. Phlebotomists have continuous patient contact and as such, are the laboratory’s ambassadors to the patient. Due to potentially critical consequences of an error, Phlebotomists must follow a strict patient identification policy that includes verification of all specimen labels that are applied to patient samples. Phlebotomists interact with computers when checking patients into the lab, generating specimen labels, arriving samples into the lab, verifying, and activating orders, and manually entering laboratory requests.
Major Responsibilities:
1. Demonstrate computer literacy while checking patients into lab, activating orders, placing manual orders, generating sample labels, looking up specimen requirements, arriving samples into the lab, and distributing lab results to proper providers.
2. Appropriate use of phones, fax machines, copiers, and scanners.
3. Ascertain validity of provider orders and implement recovery when requisitions lack pertinent information.
4. Perform DOT and non-DOT Drug and Breath Alcohol collections via Chain of Custody.
5. Provide patient instructions on specimen collection procedures.
6. Perform venipunctures, capillary draws and Point of Care testing as required following company policies and procedures.
7. Follow strict patient identification policies.
8. Train new hires in basic phlebotomy skills and participate in education, instruction, and professional development as necessary to maintain job related skills and competencies.
9. Provide clear, appropriate, and timely communications.
10. Promote a team environment.
11. Perform duties and maintain confidentiality consistent with policies and Corporate Compliance Plan.
12. Adheres to regular and predictable attendance.
13. Personally interacts, engages with and cares for patients.
14. Ensures patient safety.
Education and Learning:
REQUIRED
High school diploma or equivalency.
DESIRED
A technical college accredited phlebotomy diploma program
Work Experience:
REQUIRED
No prior lab experience required
Experience in word processing and data base programs.
DESIRED
Phlebotomy experience is preferred.
