About the Position

  • Full time Language teacher position from January 2025 to June 2025, with the option to apply for the full time role for 2025-2026
  • Language teaching load may include 4 Spanish classes ranging from level I (Beginners) to level VI (Literature, Cinema and Culture) or 3 Spanish classes and 1 French class, depending on the faculty’s experience and skills.
  • Emphasis is put on spoken fluency, reading, writing, listening and cultural studies, as well as on an inductive approach to teaching grammar
  • Near immersion pedagogy is required  (a minimum of 75% of the class period should be taught in the target language)
  • The teaching load is three 80-minute periods per 6-day cycle, following the high school’s rotating block course schedule. Classes occur between 9am and 3:20 from Monday through Friday
  • Sections have a maximum number of 18 students. 
  • Active participation in a team-based culture of collegiality is expected and supported. 

Full-time faculty responsibilities include the following:

  • Creating lesson plans following the Language department’s curriculum and policy.
  • Assigning regular homework, creating assignments and setting gradebooks  in adequation with class content and department policy
  • Grading students and giving regular feedback
  • Writing report cards quarterly
  • Joining and contributing to weekly Language team meetings
  • Offering weekly 1 hour tutorial, similar to office hours

REQUIREMENTS

Faculty must be academically prepared and highly effective at teaching and designing curriculum for a rotating block course schedule of three 80-minute periods per six-day cycle, along with a weekly tutorial period for additional individual or small group instruction. Faculty must be adept at using technology for teaching and learning, and supporting students.

In addition to teaching their core academic classes, all faculty teach in our Lab Studies program, focused on inquiry-driven, project-based, experiential real-world learning. Faculty also serve as advisors in small advisory groups that meet daily. Advisors are responsible for supporting, advising, and mentoring students through their four years of high school, helping them to understand themselves as learners and to lead their fall and spring family conferences, and to contribute to student life and the school community.  

We work in a team-based structure with a high level of communication and collegiality. Active participation in a faculty culture of continuous learning, professional development, and intellectual growth is expected and supported. Opportunities are available to coach, direct, and lead activities in the extracurricular program, in which all students are encouraged to participate.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a language pedagogy related field is required. Master’s degree or Doctorate preferred.
  • Native or near-native fluency in Spanish required. Fluency and experience to also teach French would be appreciated.
  • 3-year minimum previous teaching experience required. High school experience strongly  preferred.
  • Familiarity with ACTFL and/or the CEFR preferred.
  • Ability to teach all levels of Spanish from “Novice low” to “Advanced high” strongly preferred.
  • Aptitude for pertinent use of technology in the language classroom required.
  • Faculty must be academically prepared and highly effective at teaching and creating engaging lessons for high schoolers while following the department’s curriculum. Working closely with  their colleagues and the department Chair, faculty are expected to loop advisors, grade deans and/or the learning specialist when students are encountering some significant difficulties. 

Compensation

This is a full-time faculty position with an expected base salary of $68,000–$155,040 commensurate with education and experience on the faculty salary scale.
