To serve as a civilian employee of the Indiana State Police (ISP) whose primary responsibility is to support the LaboratoryDivision’s forensic firearms and tool mark analysis at an entry-level.

Job Duties

  • Perform administrative and support functions as necessary to maintain analytical service.
  • Acquire and maintain analytical proficiency in forensic firearms and tool mark analysis.
  • Satisfactory progress in an ISP recognized forensic firearms and tool mark training/testing program and competency testing.
  • Upon completion of relevant training, conduct forensic analysis of routine firearms and tool mark evidence utilizing approved Unit Test Methods.
  • Perform work under direct supervision.
  • Demonstrate communication skills and forensic science knowledge.
  • Satisfactory complete competency/proficiency testing.
  • Qualify to testify in court as an expert witness in the area of forensic firearms and tool mark analysis.
  • Assist in preventative maintenance of laboratory instruments and safety equipment.
  • Participate in continuing education and training programs in the analysis of forensic firearms and tool mark evidence.
  • Comply with Standard Operating Procedures, Rules, Regulations, and Laboratory policies.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher with natural and/or forensic science courses.
  • Basic knowledge of firearms and ammunition components is desirable.
  • Basic knowledge of theory and practical operation of various scientific instrumentation and analytical techniques is desirable.
  • Ability to perform complex scientific procedures in an unbiased manner following the Unit Test Methods.
  • Ability to comprehend, demonstrate, and explain advanced knowledge of theory and practical operation of various scientific instruments and analytical techniques.
  • Ability to effectively operate various computer systems and software.
  • Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to adhere to established laboratory safety practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to testify as an expert witness in an objective, unbiased, and professional manner.
  • Must be able to differentiate colors as evidenced by medical certification.
  • A Department toxicology screening will be required.
  • The successful candidate will required to sign a three (3) year employment agreement.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to travel by aircraft and other vehicles, and may be required.
  • Ability to attend training at alternate locations for extended periods of time.
  • Current/Past Indiana State Police employees: For pre-1987 ad 1987 Pension Plan members wishing to apply for this position, the provisions of of HMR-023 apply. Part 1 (11-12), Part 4 (37f) and Part 5 (38e) of the Pension Trust Agreement also apply. A copy of the restated Pension Trust Agreement is available upon request from the Human Resources Division.
