Department Summary


The UCLA Law Library serves the Law School faculty and students as their basic library and study resource for teaching and research. There are approximately 1,200 law students, approximately 100 faculty, and more than 120 Law School staff. The school has a varied and demanding curriculum, highly productive faculty, an extensive clinical and externship program, and a co-curricular program that includes an active moot court program and 15 law journals. The Law Library also supplies the legal literature resources for other UCLA faculty, students, and staff with a need for such materials. Regular use of the Law Library is made by members of the bench and bar. The Law Library is one of the largest professional school libraries on campus. It currently has a staff of 17 librarians and 16 staff personnel, as well as many part-time student employees. It contains over 600,000 bound volumes and documents and over 20,000 microform titles. The administration of the Law Library is headed by the Law Library Director, who reports to the Dean of the UCLA School of Law. The day-to-day functions of the library have been divided into five sections: Access & Information Services (AIS); Bibliographic Services & Collection Management; Empirical Research Group; RA Program; and Reference & Research Services. The AIS department interacts extensively and collaboratively with the other departments in providing services to the Law School community. The Library hires numerous student employees throughout the library and also supervises a large number of law students hired by the UCLA School of Law as research assistants who are assigned to work on various projects for faculty. The Law Library has a beautiful facility that was designed by an internationally renowned architectural firm.

Position Summary

The Evening Circulation & Reserves Coordinator (ECRC) supervises all library operations and provides directional assistance and basic and limited reference service during evenings and Sundays. The ECRC is also responsible for the day-to-day processing and maintenance of class reserves for all UCLA Law School classes. Major duties include: Assisting patrons at the Circulation Desk and providing basic and limited reference services; assists supervising full-time guards and student Community Service Officers (CSOs) on duty at the access control point and assisting with supervising Student Circulation & Stacks Supervisors; processing all reserves; providing billing and departmental support; ensuring that full and proper communication occurs between the various evening and Sunday shifts and between the day and evening shifts; multiple duties are performed simultaneously while at the Circulation Desk. The ECRC is the primary supervisor of the library during the evening and on Sunday (Sunday 10am-7pm and Monday-Thursday 1pm - 10pm). Hours may vary to support operational needs, and during finals and intersession. While scheduled on the circulation desk, helping library users is the first priority; however, the supervisor is expected to handle "non-desk" responsibilities while on the desk as is practical and as time permits. Under the general direction of the Circulation, Reserves, and Stacks Manager (CRSM) the Evening Circulation Coordinator organizes and performs duties to ensure even workflow, prompt completion of assignments and reliable access to all library circulation services and reserves resources. The Evening Circulation and Reserves Coordinator uses independent judgment to resolve or suggest solutions to unusual problems or unique projects, providing appropriate analysis and documentation; occasionally consults with supervisor. The ECRC is a contributing member of the Student Managers Group and participates in all aspects of hiring and training Student Circulation & Stacks Supervisors.

Salary & Compensation

Qualifications

• Working knowledge of public services, circulation and reserves practices, policies, rules, and procedures in an academic, research or law library environment. (Required)

• Working knowledge of legal bibliography and skill in interpreting legal citations; working knowledge of a law library collection, including various classification schemes, such as Library of Congress, Yale-Columbia, SuDocs, etc (Required)

• Working knowledge of an integrated library system (such as Alma). (Required)

• Ability to perform job responsibilities with frequent interruptions and to adjust quickly and easily to changing needs and new situations. (Required)

• Basic working knowledge of library catalogs (UC Library Search, WorldCat) and online databases (Westlaw, HeinOnline, etc.) (Required)

• Basic working knowledge of U.S. copyright law as it pertains to library circulation and reserve operations. (Required)

• Demonstrated skill in interviewing and supervising library staff and student assistants: including hiring, training, scheduling, organizing workflow to accomplish objectives, delegating responsibilities, evaluating job performance, and engaging in disciplinary action. (Required)

• Outstanding organizational skills to manage multiple projects and perform efficiently and courteously in a fast-paced environment with conflicting priorities and frequent distractions and interruptions. (Required)

• Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively & independently & establish, adjust priorities to accurately reflect the relative importance of multiple job responsibilities within the framework of departmental & library policies while coping with a fluctuating workload and competing demands. (Required)

• Excellent written and oral communication skills to interact effectively in a public and professional setting with individuals from diverse backgrounds, provide group presentations, and compose departmental documentation. (Required)

• Interpersonal skills to enable working closely with others, assisting patrons in the use of the library, and maintaining poise in difficult situations. (Required)

• Working knowledge of library applications such as LibAnswers, LibWizard, LibGuides, Leganto, and Bruin Learn. (Required)
