Job Description

Direct Supervisor:

The Environmental Education Teacher reports to the Associate Head of School.

Overall responsibilities for EE Teachers may include but are not limited to:

Teaching

  • Develop curricula and deliver instruction consistent with the school's mission and core values, standards of teaching excellence 
  • Work collaboratively with classroom teachers in support of the Class Unit.
  • Teach classroom lessons in support of the Class Unit.

Trip Leading

  • Plan and lead an average of four-day trips per month (one per class per month).
  • Organize and lead 8 extended field trips, ranging from 3 to 10 days, per school year.
  • Manage the budget for each trip.
  • Recruit, hire, and train/supervise trip assistants for extended trips.
  • Drive a bus for field trip transportation and maintain gas levels and cleanliness as needed. 
  • Plan meals, grocery shop, manage a camp kitchen, and prepare food for up to 28 people.

Risk Management

  • Manage student health concerns and medications on extended trips, with advanced parent communication as needed.
  • Complete mandatory trainings, such as those for child safety, universal precautions, medication delegation, etc.
  • Maintain a Wilderness First Responder certification.

Communication

  • Participate in meetings as requested.
  • Maintain positive and professional relationships with families.
  • Communicate with core classroom teachers regarding any concerns about a student, any schedule changes, and any other issues in which information will allow each teacher to better meet the needs of the child.

Other

  • Manage the EE lab and EE gear room
  • Attend weekly all-staff meetings, staff retreats, EXPO, and other teacher and PD work days.
  • Teach elective classes or substitute teach as needed.
  • Perform miscellaneous other duties as assigned by the Head of School
Hours:

The Logan School work day is 8:00 am-4:00 pm, though EE teacher hours vary as required by job responsibilities.

  • Overnight, weekend, and extended work-week hours are required for overnight trips. Up to 46 days/38 nights are spent on overnight trips within one school year.
  • Due to the tight schedule of the overnight trip season in the fall and spring, additional hours during the work week and weekends are necessary to transition between trips.
  • At least once per week until 5:00 pm for All-Staff Meetings
  • Occasional evening/weekend hours for school-wide events.

A Brief Overview of the EE Year/Schedule Requirements:

August through mid-October--Intensely Busy

  • Up to 20 days/16 nights on trips
  • Prep time for upcoming trips

Mid-October through Early April--Regular Busy

  • Planning and going on around 4-day trips per month, except February 
  • Snowshoe trips (in January and March) are longer days
  • Planning spring overnights, AS spring trips have more logistics
  • Teach elective classes or substitute teach as needed
  • Other projects: Organizing EE gear room, gear maintenance (tents), zoom presentations, etc.

Mid-April through May--Intensely Busy

  • Up to 26 days/22 nights on trips
  • Prep time for upcoming trips
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in an environmental education field
  • Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail
  • Experience in teaching, specifically in an outdoor education setting
  • Computer literate in Google Suite and comfortable navigating technology
  • Experience managing a budget
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening
  • Valid driver’s license
