Duties
Major Duties
- Processes crime scenes; documents crime scenes utilizing digital photography, video recording, sketches, measurements, and searching and processing evidence.
- Processes evidence for latent and patent fingerprints.
- Processes biological evidence.
- Packages and seals evidence.
- Completes a variety of forms and reports.
- Makes fingerprint comparisons.
- Fingerprints victims and suspects.
- Testifies in court.
- Analyzes drug samples.
- Maintains evidence / property room.
- Track evidence using computer software to maintain chain of custody.
- Responds to after-hours calls.
- Attends required training.
- Performs related duties.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalency
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Police Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia.
- Ability to obtain GA POST related certification(s) or approved equivalency.
Knowledge Required by the Position
- Knowledge of fingerprint analysis principles.
- Knowledge of criminal investigation principles and practices.
- Knowledge of crime scene processing and evidence collection methods.
- Knowledge of evidence collection, retention and disposal requirements.
- Knowledge of drug identification principles.
- Skill in the use of digital photography and videography principles.
- Skill in the use of computers and job-related software programs.
- Skill in planning, organizing, analyzing, decision making, and problem solving.
- Skill in the use of firearms and other standard and specialized equipment.
- Skill in public relations.
- Skill in interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office. Laboratory, and outdoors, occasionally in inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, irritating chemicals, and contagious or infectious diseases. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
- The work may be on an 8-hour, 10-hour, or 12-hour shift, with the requirement to have some on-call status.
