Job Description
When acclaimed winemaker Dan Goldfield and legacy farmer Steve Dutton inspired to partner and craft their best version of Russian River Valley Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the result has been a 25+ year legacy of producing small quantity, exceptional wines from Dutton Ranch vineyards in Sonoma County with the balance, structure and complexity that have defined Dan Goldfield’s winemaking career. Today, Dutton-Goldfield produces terroir-driven wines using fruit selected from the Dutton family’s 80 Russian River vineyards as well as other cold coastal sites in Northern California and has expanded to include Pinot Blanc, Gewurztraminer, and Zinfandel showcasing the winery’s diversity and mission to create food-worthy, sustainable, and most importantly, enjoyable wines.
General Description:
We are looking for a cellar worker with a passion for wine, and great enthusiasm for crafting wines of exceptional quality. Candidates will ideally have at least 2 years’ prior winery experience. A successful applicant will have a can-do attitude, pristine attention to detail, ability to work well as part of a team or on one’s own and possess a willingness to ask questions when directions are not crystal clear.
Duties, and Responsibilities:
As a cellar worker, you will work under the direction of our winemaking team. You will be working side-by-side with them, assisting with all aspects of the winemaking processes.
The ideal candidate must be able to perform the following duties to a very high industry standard, including but not limited to:
• All harvest-related duties
• Cleaning and sanitation of hoses & equipment
• Operating motor driven positive displacement, centrifugal, and air pumps
• Maintenance, preparation, and filling of old and new barrels
• Following written and verbal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
• Shipping and receiving bulk wine, barrels, case goods, glass, supplies, tanks, equipment, and other winemaking items.
• Sanitizing empty wine tanks
• Operating filtration equipment and setting up for filtrations by third party vendors
• Bottling operations including preparing hoses and packing station, monitoring tank volume, gassing tanks, adjusting gasses of wine, and inventorying product.
• Forklift work including moving and stacking wine barrels, pallets of full and empty glass, tanks, dumping fruit, emptying press
• Perform additions to tank and barrels; stir and top barrels on a regular basis.
Qualifications:
• Degree or coursework in winemaking/fermentation sciences is a plus, but experience in all phases of winery work is valued just as highly
• 2-3 years’ experience in all phases of cellar work
• Forklift experience desired
• Commitment to work full-time plus extended hours during various periods of the year
• Ability to be highly organized with acute attention to details
• Ability to perform basic math
• Ability to communicate effectively in English
• Ability to multitask and work safely in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to work flexible and extended hours on short notice
• Must have a valid driver’s license with good driving record
• Must be at least 21 years of age and have legal United States work status
Work Environment Requirements:
• Work in confined spaces and high places
• Stand for long periods of time
• Lift 50 lbs. repeatedly
• Work with chemicals that require protective equipment (goggles, gloves, etc.)
• Sit, stand, and walk on uneven surfaces for extended periods of time
• Perform work duties inside and outdoors
• Must be able to work in cold, damp and dark cellar environment
Emphasis on safety, cleanliness and sanitation is essential. This is a regular-full time position; flexible work hours including some evening and weekend work will be required, especially during harvest in the fall.
