Job Description

The Statistics & Analytics Core in the Institute for Public Health Practice, Research and Policy in the College of Public Health is seeking multiple Biostatistician I positions. These positions will:

• Work with state partners and Program staff in web and paper form design for data collection.
• Work with Program staff on database design for data storage and retrieval for new or modified studies.
• Participate in the development of methods for organizing, documenting, and archiving statistical analysis programs, data sets, and results; to work closely with other Program programming and research staff in conducting analyses and archiving results.
• Work with Program staff to anticipate and address longitudinal data compatibility issues, as the data collection requirements of long-term project will change over time.
• Consult with researchers and provide biostatistical assistance (guidance, teaching, analysis).
• Recommend areas for data analysis and methods of analysis that could be used to accomplish goals of Program projects.
• Assist in judging the validity of data obtained and to recommend additional tests and/or modifications to the analysis.
• Write, test, document, and implement computer programs which perform simple and complex statistical analyses and other computations.
• Take responsibility for knowing the data reporting and vouching requirements mandated by project contracts and incorporate that information into project programming and recommendations.
• Communicate regularly with investigators at collaborating institutions, including Iowa Health and Human Services (HHS) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), regarding data analytic requirements and issues; to determine appropriate analysis techniques for answering the questions of interest; to communicate results to investigators and partners in writing (e.g., HHS staff).
• Write reports of statistical analyses and to prepare written materials for funding agencies and others (e.g., CDC, HHS, NIH, AHRQ).
• Present results of analyses at investigators' meetings and other forums.
• Perform library research on specified topics, including validated survey questions, accessing nationally and internationally public data, and statistical methods and trends applicable to Program projects.
• Evaluate data management and statistical options, methods and trends and apply them in Program data analysis as appropriate; to prepare bibliographies, abstracts, and written justifications for such choices.
• Assist in the preparation of research papers and manuscripts for publication and presentation at conferences and meetings; to assist in writing project reports, grant applications, articles, and other documents. Write and contribute to the level of co-author on research publications.
• Prepare data presentations for conferences, meetings, or for publications which consist of charts, graphs, tables, or other illustrations to facilitate the interpretation of data findings.
• Write programs to generate data summaries and data listings for reports.

Required:

• The academic knowledge of the area of biostatistics or applied statistics, including advanced study associated with a Master's degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, Data Science or equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience.
• Strong verbal and written communications skills.
• Experience programming in SAS or R in a professional setting. Includes knowledge and experience using the Output Delivery System or R Markdown.
• Demonstrated ability for accuracy and attention to detail.
• Demonstrated ability to function independently.

Highly Desired:

• Experience creating datasets for statistical analyses by merging and manipulating data sets.
• Knowledge of relational database structures and methods beyond merging data sets.
• Experience with creating drill-down HTML pages.
• Experience designing and building data visualizations using tools such as ggplot2, plotly, or other packages.
• Experience working directly with community partners or others without research backgrounds on issues related to statistical and technical expertise.
• Knowledge of and experience fitting linear or generalized linear mixed effects models using actual research data.

Desired:

• Knowledge and experience using terminology related to medical and healthcare research.
• Experience with Bayesian statistical methods and related software using actual research data.
• Experience with sample size and power calculations using actual research data.
• Experience with survey sampling weighting.
• Additional experience with visualization tools (E.g., Shiny, Tableau).

This position is eligible for remote work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment.
