Job Summary:

UW Veterinary Care (UWVC) is excited to welcome a lead veterinary technician to our Anesthesia service. The selected candidate will provide logistical assistant, optimize organization, communication, and collaboration skills to keep the anesthesia service running smoothly and efficiently.

Responsibilities:

Assists veterinarians in the care of animals. Prepares and performs the most complex animal care procedures or serves as an expert in a specialized animal care area, and serves as a resource and lead to other technicians and student employees.
  • 40% Assists veterinarians and researchers in animal care, diagnostic, preventative, research, anesthesia, surgery, post-operative care, euthanasia and radiology procedures under minimal supervision. May perform minor surgical procedures or other minor invasive procedures
  • 20% Prepares, completes, monitors, and documents complex technical animal care procedures and work unit activities, assessments, and medication administration according to established care plans and medical necessity
  • 5% Keeps records of all controlled substances and inventory records
  • 5% Maintains surgical support facilities in sanitized, well-stocked, and in orderly manner; and ensures that preventative maintenance of equipment is performed
  • 5% Assists in training new veterinary and/or animal care technicians and supervises work as appropriate
  • 5% Maintains records regarding animal treatments, medications, diagnostic procedures, and illness
  • 5% Serves as a lead to set up and prepare the anesthesia schedule for the following day.
  • 10% Serves as a lead for managing anesthesia caseload to meet the operational needs of the hospital and provide coverage as float nursing staff as needed.
  • 5% Collaborates with faculty, supervisor, and staff within the hospital to schedule and prioritize cases, including emergency cases.

Tasks:

  • Accurately calculates drug dosages, drug dilutions, CRI's and intravenous fluid rates.
  • Assists or initiates preparation/workup of patient undergoing anesthesia by assessing patient and chart for clinical history. Completing a written anesthetic plan and reviewing with supervising clinician.
  • Completes charge sheets and enters all charges into patient's account.
  • Ensures all controlled substances are properly logged onto patient's record. Wastes all controlled substances no longer needed by patient to meet pharmacy guidelines.
  • Instructs fourth year veterinary students, assists students with catheters, intubation and patient care pre-op, post-op.
  • Knows the location of the CPR crash cart and is trained in CPR techniques and drugs.
  • Maintains accurate and complete anesthesia medical record.
  • Maintains, cleans and troubleshoots all anesthesia equipment. Facilitates equipment repairs with purchasing in a timely fashion.
  • Operates and interprets all physiologic patient monitors including EKG, direct and indirect blood pressure, pulse oximeter, capnograph, gas analyzer, temperature and blood gas analyzer.
  • Participates in rotating on-call shifts as needed.
  • Performs needed blood test for PCV/TP, AZO, blood glucose and blood gases.
  • Performs patient pain assessment with the aid of approved clinical pain scoring chart.
  • Places venous and arterial catheters, performs intubations, local blocks, epidurals and special procedures.
  • Restrains and anesthetizes various species: dogs, cats, horses, cattle, birds and exotics, etc.
  • Stocks and maintains adequate supplies of consumables in induction and storage areas of anesthesia section.
  • Facilitate veterinary nurses', assistants' and student lunch breaks.
  • Create and maintain training manual for Veterinary Assistants and student workers.
  • Primarily responsible for onboarding and training Veterinary Nurse assistants.
  • Primarily responsible for hiring student workers.
  • Update and maintain training manual for Veterinary Nurses.
  • Participate in writing and implementing protocols, checklists and standard operating procedures in coordination with supervisor and faculty.

Work Schedule:

Two schedule options are available:

7:00am-5:30pm 4 days a week between Monday-Friday

OR

9:00am - 5:30pm 5 days a week Monday-Friday

On-call hours as required by the hospital

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
